Nutmeg’s Story: From Loss to Love Again
When Nutmeg first came back to us, she wasn’t alone.
She arrived with her bonded mate, Pua. The two of them had already built a life together. They had already chosen each other.
And then, without warning, Nutmeg lost her.
Pua passed suddenly from heart failure. One moment Nutmeg had her partner beside her, and the next she was alone.
There was no long goodbye. No time to prepare.

Since then, Nutmeg was not quite the same.
She became more vocal. More protective of her space. More cautious about the world around her. Not because she was mean or difficult, but because she was grieving. The bunny who had made the world feel safe was suddenly gone.
Grief does not only belong to humans. Animals feel it deeply too. When they lose a companion, they feel that absence in ways we cannot always see right away.
Nutmeg needed patience. She needed someone who would take things slowly and try to understand where her fear was coming from.
And we worried.
We worried that people might see her hesitation and pass her by. That they might miss the loving bunny underneath the fear. That the loss she experienced would make it harder for her to find a forever home.
But we also believed something else.
We believed Nutmeg deserved another chance at happiness.
Sometimes healing takes time.
And sometimes healing begins with a new friend.
A New Beginning
And then, when Nutmeg was ready, the universe sent her someone special.
His name is Fluffernutter.
From the very first time they met, something clicked. It was the kind of connection you hope for but can never force. They understood each other almost immediately.
When Nutmeg went home for a sleepover with Fluffernutter, their new mom began sending us updates that quickly made us realize something wonderful was happening.

“They managed to knock the treat bag off my night table last night and eat half of them. They are truly partners in crime.”
Not long after, she wrote again.
“They are so cute together! I can’t even explain it. Fluff loves her so much and she loves him so much. I can’t believe how fast they bonded.”
The same Nutmeg who once felt uncertain and protective of her space was now exploring her new home with curiosity and confidence.
“She flops all the time so I know she is feeling right at home and she is wonderfully curious. She seems very happy!”
Of course, the two of them have already started creating a few secrets of their own.
“They found a way into the underpart of my boxspring and that’s their clubhouse now. No hoomans allowed.”
And perhaps the sweetest update of all:
“She is so sweet though. At least once a day I make sure she and I cuddle for at least 30 minutes.”
Love Can Come Back
Nutmeg’s story reminds us of something we see again and again in rescue.
Animals grieve. They feel loss deeply. But with patience, safety, and love, they can heal.
The bunny who once felt unsure of the world now has a partner in crime, a safe home, and a family who adores her.
Nutmeg found love again. She found safety again. She found her happy ending.
Sometimes healing looks like patience.
Sometimes it looks like a second chance.
And sometimes it looks like two bunnies knocking over a bag of treats together in the middle of the night.
And for Nutmeg, that second chance came in the form of a bunny named Fluffernutter.
