We’ve Been Building This in Living Rooms for Years

For years, Houston Rabbit Resource has existed across the city.

In spare bedrooms turned into bunny rooms.
In garages filled with donated hay.
In borrowed event spaces and pop-up vaccine clinics.
In late-night texts about dumped rabbits who needed somewhere safe to land.

We built this rescue out of living rooms.

And it worked because this community showed up in a big way.

But over time, we started to feel the limits.

When someone finds a rabbit abandoned in a park, we scramble to find a foster.
When we host an adoption event or vaccine clinic, we coordinate space and transport supplies across town.
When we teach Bunny Basics, we piece together whatever setup we can.

We made it work.

But we have outgrown “making it work.”

This May, Houston Rabbit Resource is opening our very first physical space.

Not a shelter.
Not rows of cages.

A home base.

Why This Is So Important

Rabbits are the third most surrendered animal in shelters, and yet they remain one of the least understood.

Here in Houston, we see it every day.

We hear from people who find dumped rabbits. From families overwhelmed after being given misinformation. From bunny parents who want to do better but don’t know where to turn.

Until now, we have answered those calls from wherever we could. In between work, from our cars, from our homes.

This space allows us to meet that need with structure, consistency, and intention.

It gives us a place to:

  • Host adoption events and bunny speed dates
  • Teach Bunny Basics in person
  • Run RHDV2 vaccine clinics
  • Hold trainings for our spay and neuter clinics
  • Offer grooming through our Hare Salon
  • Store supplies in one centralized location
  • Bring volunteers and the community together
  • Provide short-term overnight boarding for foster rabbits who need monitoring before returning to their foster homes

And just as importantly, we are staying foster-based.

Our rabbits will continue living in foster homes where they receive individualized care, socialization, and enrichment. That has always been core to how we operate, and it is not changing.

This space does not replace that model.

It makes it stronger.

A Resource Center, Not a Shelter

When you walk into this space, you will not see overcrowded cages.

You will see a hub designed for connection, education, and impact.

  • A welcoming adoption and outreach area for meet-and-greets and events
  • A dedicated space for classes, education, and hands-on learning
  • A nonprofit boutique with rabbit-safe supplies and toys, making essential care more accessible while supporting rescue work
  • A clinic setup for vaccines and wellness services
  • A thoughtfully designed boarding area for rabbit families who need safe, knowledgeable care

Our bunny boarding program is especially exciting.

It gives guardians a trusted place for their rabbits while they travel, and it creates a sustainable stream of funding that goes right back into rescue.

Every service in this space supports the work happening behind the scenes.

This is not just a location.

It is a long-term investment in doing this work better.

What This Means for the Rabbits

This space allows us to grow in a way that is sustainable for both our team and the animals we serve.

We can support fosters more effectively.
We can host consistent clinics and events.
We can give adopters a better, calmer experience.
We can educate before problems turn into emergencies.

And when someone asks how they can help, we finally have a place to welcome them in.

You’re Invited

We are getting close, and we want you to be part of this moment.

Soon, we will host our very first open house. This will be a chance to step inside the space and see what you helped build.

We are planning:

  • Light bites and drinks
  • A guided tour of the space
  • Meet our board and volunteers
  • A look at what is ahead
  • A chance to celebrate this milestone together

Details are coming soon.

Help Us Finish Strong

Opening a space comes with real costs. Build-out materials, fixtures, insurance, utilities, security, and equipment all add up quickly.

If you have ever shared one of our posts, donated supplies, fostered a rabbit, or believed in what we are building, this is your moment to be part of it.

You can:

  • Make a financial gift to support build-out and startup costs
  • Sponsor a portion of the space
  • Donate professional services such as electricians, contractors, signage, IT, or legal guidance
  • Donate furnishings like a fridge, tables, or chairs. A full list is coming soon
  • Share this announcement with your network

We started this rescue in living rooms.

Now we are creating a space that can support an entire community.

May is just the beginning.

And we cannot wait to open the doors and open a whole new way to help Houston rabbits.
