Houston Rabbit Resource is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless and stray domestic rabbits through rescue, education, foster care, adoption support, and community resources.
Our Story
How It Started
Our story began with one abandoned rabbit, one deeply loved bunny, and a shared belief that Houston’s rabbits deserved better.
From Ivy, we learned how many rabbits were falling through the cracks. From Charles, we learned how hard it can be for loving families to find the right support. Together, those stories shaped Houston Rabbit Resource into more than a rescue. They shaped it into a place for second chances, education, community, and compassionate care.
Ivy’s Story
Houston Rabbit Resource began with one rabbit named Ivy.
Our founder, Nancy Martin, thought she had retired from bunny rescue. Then she found Ivy on the side of the road. Ivy had clearly been abandoned after being bred, discarded when she was no longer useful, and left with a mammary tumor and no one looking out for her.
Nancy took Ivy in, gave her safety, and realized something heartbreaking: Ivy was not the only one.
There were more rabbits just like her. Rabbits being dumped, misunderstood, neglected, bred, rehomed without support, or left behind because people did not know where to turn. What started as one act of compassion became Houston Rabbit Resource, a rescue built to give rabbits like Ivy a second chance and to help prevent more rabbits from ending up in the same situation.
Charles’ Story
Years before HRR became what it is today, I brought home my first bunny, Charles.
I loved him deeply and wanted to do everything right, but I quickly learned how hard it was to find reliable rabbit care in Houston. I had to search, call around, read reviews, ask questions, and do a lot of research just to find a safe place for Charles to be seen and neutered.
Even now, truly rabbit-savvy veterinary care in the Houston area is limited. Because there are so few options, care can become expensive very quickly. For many families, that means having to make hard choices when all they want is to do right by their bunny.
Charles changed the way I saw rabbit welfare. I wanted other bunny families to have an easier path than I did. I wanted them to find trusted resources, education, support, and safe care without feeling alone. I also wanted more rabbits to find the kind of loving home Charles found with me.
When I began working with HRR, I was able to share that vision with Nancy. Our goals quickly aligned. HRR was not just going to be a rescue. It was going to become a resource, a support system, and a place where rabbits and the people who love them could finally find help.
Today, that vision continues to guide everything we do. Every adoption, class, clinic, boarding stay, grooming appointment, and conversation is part of a bigger mission: to make Houston a safer, kinder, and more informed place for rabbits.
