Meet Lazarus
Lazarus arrived at Houston Rabbit Resource on a quiet Monday, surrendered for what was believed to be an eye infection. The moment we lifted him from his carrier, we realized he had been carrying far more than anyone knew.
His fur was crawling with fleas.
Mites were deep in his irritated skin.
Thick mats pulled at him every time he moved.
His genitals were painfully swollen.
His breathing was congested.
His body was exhausted.
And yet, even in that moment, Lazarus pressed his head gently into our hands. A small gesture. A quiet plea. A sign that he still believed someone might help him.
He began treatments right away. As the layers of fur and discomfort were shaved away, his tiny body finally relaxed. He drank water eagerly. He leaned into every soft touch. He accepted the warmth we offered. He showed us that he wanted to fight, even through pain that most rabbits would hide until it was too late.
Lazarus is not out of the woods yet, but he is safe now. He is healing. He is rising.
His courage is the reason this fund exists.
Why the Lazarus Medical Fund Matters
Every year, HRR takes in bunnies who arrive just like Lazarus.
Bunnies with:
- severe medical conditions
- untreated infections
- mange and mites
- flea infestations
- respiratory illness
- swollen or injured limbs
- starvation or dehydration
- matted fur so tight they can hardly move
These rabbits need urgent veterinary care, medication, diagnostics, emergency support, and weeks or months of dedicated rehabilitation. Their medical bills are heavy, and their journeys are long, but their lives are worth saving.
