Rising From the Ashes: Phoenix’s Story
In mid-June, neighbors in College Station began spotting a “loose cat” wandering the neighborhood late at night. For weeks, no one could get close enough to help. By late July, someone finally realized what they were seeing wasn’t a cat at all—it was a rabbit.
And he was in terrible shape.
On a scorching 105° day, a kind neighbor rushed to the rescue. What she saw nearly broke her heart: torn ears, a deep gash across his nose, labored breathing, and a body covered in dirt and urine. Weak and sluggish, he looked as if he had already given up.
She didn’t.
She scooped him up, took him to the vet right away, and paid for his urgent care out of her own pocket. There, it was discovered that Phoenix — as she soon named him — had survived an attack that left him with an injury above his teeth, which led to infection and painful congestion. With treatment and her round-the-clock care, he began to feel a spark of life again.
When she reached out to Houston Rabbit Resource and asked if she could foster him in place, we said yes. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to enroll Phoenix into our program and provide the supplies, continued vet care, and community support needed for his recovery.
And that’s when his transformation truly began.
Within a week, Phoenix was already on his way back from the ashes. His fur softened, his energy returned, and for the first time in who knows how long, he felt safe enough to binky.
Today, Phoenix is thriving with his rescuer and foster. He stretches out on the couch to watch Sci-Fi, munches on his beloved “bunny popcorn” (Science Selective pellets), and happily crunches oat hay. From a fragile, broken little rabbit barely clinging to life, he has become a picture of resilience, joy, and love.
