Hopping into Action: A Holiday Rescue Story

While many families were gathered around the table enjoying an Easter meal or watching little ones hunt for eggs, a few of our dedicated volunteers were rushing out the door to help a family of another kind—a rabbit mom and her five-week-old babies who had recently released outdoors.

The situation started with a misunderstanding. The owner, following advice they believed to be true, thought the rabbit family would be able to survive on their own outside once the babies were around four weeks old. Unfortunately, domestic rabbits don’t have the instincts or survival skills their wild cousins do. Life outdoors is full of risks for them, from predators to weather to the lack of safe food and shelter.

As soon as we got the call, our team rolled into action. On a holiday when they could have been relaxing at home with loved ones, several of our volunteers showed up within hours to help. Working carefully and compassionately, they were able to safely capture five of the babies.

The mother and one baby are still out there, but we haven’t given up. A volunteer who lives nearby is keeping watch, and we’ve set a humane trap in hopes of bringing the rest of the little family to safety soon.

These are the kinds of moments that show just how much heart this community has. Our volunteers didn’t hesitate. They saw a need and answered it, even on a holiday. Because every bunny matters.

Situations like this also remind us how important it is to have foster homes available. We never know when a rabbit will need a soft place to land. Whether it’s an emergency rescue or a surrender, being able to say “yes” depends on having a network of people ready to help.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is your sign. You don’t need to be an expert, just someone with a little extra space and a whole lot of love.
