Center Stories
Houston’s Rabbits Needed More Than Rescue
The Houston Rabbit Resource Center was created because rabbits and their people needed somewhere to turn.
For a long time, rabbit families in Houston have had to figure things out on their own.
They have had to search for rabbit-savvy vets, safe housing advice, trustworthy supplies, grooming help, boarding options, bonding support, and basic education in a city where those resources can be hard to find. For many families, loving a rabbit has meant doing hours of research, making phone calls, reading conflicting advice online, and hoping they are making the right choices.
Houston Rabbit Resource was created because rabbits deserve better than that.
And now, the Houston Rabbit Resource Center was created because rescue alone was never going to be enough.
The Gap We Kept Seeing
As a rescue, we have met rabbits who were abandoned, injured, neglected, misunderstood, or surrendered by families who simply did not know where else to turn. We have also met so many people who loved their rabbits deeply but could not find the support they needed.
Sometimes the issue was medical care. Sometimes it was bonding. Sometimes it was grooming. Sometimes it was finding safe supplies that were actually made with rabbits in mind. Sometimes it was just having someone say, “You are not alone, and we can help you figure this out.”
Again and again, we saw the same thing.
Houston did not just need a rabbit rescue. Houston needed a rabbit resource.
Why This Is Personal
For me, that need became real because of my first rabbit, Charles.
When Charles came into my life, I loved him immediately, but I also learned very quickly how hard it could be to find reliable rabbit care in Houston. I had to search for vets, compare reviews, call clinics, ask questions, and hope I was making safe choices for him. Even something as basic as finding a place that truly understood rabbits took time, stress, and research.
Charles changed my entire life’s trajectory. He taught me how intelligent, emotional, funny, sensitive, and deeply special they are. He also taught me how much rabbit families need guidance that is easy to find, trustworthy, and compassionate.
Loving Charles made me want that support to be easier for the next person.
No one should have to feel lost while trying to do right by their bunny.
More Than a Building
The Houston Rabbit Resource Center is more than a physical space. It is the next step in making sure rabbits and their people have somewhere to turn before there is a crisis.
At the Center, rescue work, education, adoption support, wellness resources, and community programs can come together under one roof. It gives us a place to host classes, adoption events, grooming services, boarding, volunteer training, bunny-safe shopping, and conversations that help families feel more confident in caring for their rabbits.
It gives new rabbit families a place to learn.
It gives adopters a place to connect.
It gives volunteers a place to serve.
It gives rabbits a place where their needs are understood.
And it gives Houston something it has needed for a very long time.
A Place Built for Rabbits and Their People
Rabbits are often misunderstood. They are not starter pets, classroom pets, outdoor hutch pets, or animals who can thrive on cute assumptions alone. They need space, enrichment, proper diet, safe housing, regular grooming, knowledgeable medical care, and people who understand their behavior.
The Center allows us to teach those things in a hands-on, welcoming way.
It also allows us to support families before they feel overwhelmed. A family who needs help trimming nails, learning about litter boxes, preparing for boarding, choosing safe toys, or understanding bunny body language should have a place to ask those questions.
That is what this Center is for.
It is a place where rabbit care feels less confusing.
It is a place where people can learn without judgment.
It is a place where rabbits are treated like the complex, wonderful companions they are.
What This Means for Houston
The Houston Rabbit Resource Center represents a future where rabbits are not an afterthought.
It means more education before impulse decisions are made. It means more support for adopters and fosters. It means more visibility for rabbits who are waiting for homes. It means more families can get help before they feel like surrender is their only option.
It also means building a stronger rabbit-loving community in Houston.
Because when people have access to the right information, the right supplies, and the right support, rabbits have better outcomes.
They stay healthier.
They stay safer.
They stay in homes that understand them.
And when they do need rescue, there is a community ready to help.
Help Us Build What Houston’s Rabbits Have Always Needed
This Center exists because people believed Houston’s rabbits deserved more.
More than rescue.
More than emergency help.
More than scattered resources and hard-to-find answers.
They deserve a place built for them.
As we continue opening and growing the Houston Rabbit Resource Center, we invite you to be part of this next chapter. Whether you donate, volunteer, attend a class, shop from our wishlist, sponsor part of the Center, or simply share our work, you are helping create something that will serve rabbits and their families for years to come.
For every rabbit like Ivy, who deserved safety after being abandoned.
For every rabbit like Charles, who taught us how deeply these little animals can change our lives.
And for every Houston bunny still waiting for someone to understand what they need.
This Center is for them.
